Biomass can be distinguished between: solid biomass as wood or straw, fluid biomass as vegetable oil, bio diesel or biological ethyl alcohol and last but not least gaseous biomass – the biogas.
Solid biomass in the form of wood is a traditional source of energy, basically used for heating. 12 per cent of the whole Austrian energy consumption account for solid biomass.
Besides traditional wood stoves or solid fuel boilers, modern types of wood usages, like pellets- or wood chips heating are gaining importance. More and more large district heating plants are operated with biomass, mostly with wood chips or sow by-products.
The production of energy with biomass is an emerging segment with different approaches:
New thermal biomass plants
Either additional burning of biomass in existing thermal power plants or their complete conversion
Burning of biogas or liquid biomass in block heat and power plants
Furthermore liquid biomass gets more and more important as a fuel for motor vehicles.
